FOOD

The food and beverage industry places high demands on the filtration systems and filter press architectures used with regard to high DM contents, optimum washing results and uniform cake structure. The aim is to achieve the highest possible end product quality, regardless of the working temperature. As a result, durable and sound technology solutions as well as optimised and efficiently designed process parameters are critical.

MSE Filterpressen® offers you comprehensive and sophisticated filter press technologies in the field of solid-liquid separation and customer-oriented solutions to improve production, efficiency and end-product quality. Our chamber and membrane filter presses have proven themselves in a variety of applications. Filter presses in stainless steel design are successfully used for the filtration of yeast and turb as well as sugar, aspartame and palm or cooking oil. Filter presses from MSE are specially designed for high filtration quality, high filtration rates, maximum washing efficiency and a high degree of dewatering – both at high and low temperatures. As a major filter press manufacturer, we are committed to helping our customers maximise their success corresponding to our aims. We ensure this through service, a broad range, our own test and pilot facilities, quality and speed of our service range. Our highly motivated, technically trained staff is also a guarantor for the development and production of innovative, market-driven products with consistently high quality.

EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

The health-promoting effects of omega-3 fatty acids has been known for a long time: People used to take cod liver oil, but today the essential omega-3 fatty acid EPA is added to certain foods or is used as a dietary supplement. Just as in the food industry, omega-3 fatty acids also play an important role in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Omega-3 fatty acids lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure, keep the blood liquid and reduce the symptoms of many other diseases.

THE PREPARATION OF OMEGA-3 FISH OIL OFF IS A COMPLICATED PROCESS

Fish that are not suitable for consumption are sorted after a catch and are used in the production of fish oil. They are crushed and cooked. This causes omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in the fish’s fat stores, to settle on the surface. These are pumped off and go through further production processes.  Filter presses are also used in these processes. For example, an MSE filter press is used to dissolve the stearin from the omega-3 fatty acids. The fatty acids now pass through further processes. The separated stearin is used for the production of candles and soaps.

FILTRATION OF CIDER, YEAST AND LEES

Filter presses are used in the production of wines of all quality classes. The filter presses are used in different work steps. Typical applications of the filter presses are the filtration of must, yeast and lees. In particular, lees processing via a filter press often results in increased yields and time savings. Filter aids and filter cloths have been developed especially for this area. These are already used very successfully in combination with an MSE filter press. In particular, membrane filter presses with a squeezing device, which press the yeast cake to a solids content of approx. 30 – 40%, are successfully used for the filtration of yeast dregs.

MSE FILTERPRESSEN® IN THE WINE-MAKING INDUSTRY

The MSE filter presses are also at home in the large German wine growing areas known for quality wines. Depending on the quality requirements and the degree of automation, various options are used. From the drip-proof design to the stainless steel press to the product-friendly pump and special membrane filter plates (CIP), the entire range of MSE options is used. We would be happy to advise you on the best possible filtration for your application. We will even come to your company and advise you on-site.

Filter presses have proven themselves in the filtration of cooking oils. Sunflower, rapeseed and linseed oil show particularly good filtration properties. These oils are filtered at a relatively low temperatures (approx. 15-30 °C) and pressures up to 15 bar. Special requirements apply to the filter press. Special filter plates and drip-proof filter cloths with FDA approval are used here. For feeding, e.g. compressed air diaphragm pumps are suitable. These are also available with FDA approval.

MSE FILTERPRESSEN® IN THE SUGAR INDUSTRY

The processing of sugar beets for the production of sugar can naturally only take place during a short and limited period of time. From the start of the beet harvest to the processing of the last beet, the production facilities must operate at peak performance and, above all, trouble-free. During these sugar campaigns, which last between 12 and 16 weeks, the filter presses used are also exposed to the greatest stresses. Repairs or maintenance work must not be carried out during this time.

FAST AND EFFECTIVE – THE MSE FILTER PRESS FOR YOU SUCCESS

The requirements for filtration in the filter press are very high in this application field. Short cycle times in 24-hour operation and filtration temperatures between 80°C and 85°C with the best dewatering results are required. Dry matter contents of 70% and more with a residual sugar content in the filter cake of a maximum of 0.5% are required. At this point, filter presses with membrane technology have especially proven their worth. In many process steps, the filtrate, which still has a high sugar content, is recovered and recycled.
